A short history

Built in 1904–1907, the cathedral is associated with engineer Andrei Zenkov. The familiar claim that it was built without a single nail is misleading: the church's official account describes metal ties and fastenings in the timber structure.

What to look for

Walk around the exterior to see the bell tower, colourful domes and timber details from different angles. Step back onto a park path for a wider photograph and keep the entrance clear.

Visiting a working church

Services still take place here. Check the cathedral's official website before travelling. Keep quiet inside and ask locally about photography. Organise your visit so that it does not interrupt worship.

Make it part of your day

Continue through the park and towards the Green Bazaar. If architecture is your main interest, begin outside; you can enjoy the building without making the whole day's plan depend on access to its interior.
