This walk combines a working market, architecture and pedestrian streets. Travel from O2 to the centre, then walk between stops. Adapt the order to market hours and church services.

Walk to Ulitsa Varlamova → bus 16 or 126 to Ozdorovitelny Kompleks Arasan → walk 4 minutes.

Bus 201, 206, 37 or 48 from Ulitsa Varlamova to Pushkin → walk about 7 minutes.
A 1941 architectural landmark combining grand classicism, Kazakh ornament, opera and ballet in the historic centre.

Bus 16, 126, 201, 206, 37 or 48 to Ploshchad Astana → walk about 9 minutes.

Bus 48 to Hotel Kazakhstan → walk about 6 minutes to Abai Square.

Travel from Hostel O2: ≈ 40–55 min
Direct bus 48 to the Hotel Kazakhstan stop → walk about 3 minutes.

Travel from Hostel O2: ≈ 45–60 min
Walk about 6 minutes to Ulitsa Tlendieva → take bus 65 to the Palace of the Republic → walk about 10 minutes to 12 Baitasov Street.
This is the Consulate General, not the Chinese Embassy; the embassy is in Astana. Check the official website for appointment and visitor requirements before travelling.

Take public transport towards Satpayev Street and Nazarbayev Avenue; open the live route from Hostel O2 before leaving.

Travel from Hostel O2: ≈ 45–70 min
Bus 48 to Hotel Kazakhstan → walk about 5 minutes to the lower station → cable car to Kok Tobe.
Check the cable-car status before travelling and allow extra time for possible queues.
A high-altitude complex under reconstruction; an ice-rink visit is not currently part of the itinerary.

Travel from Hostel O2: ≈ 1 hr 30 min–2 hr 10 min
Use live directions to the Medeu area. Reconstruction may change access to individual sections.
Completion is planned for Q4 2027. Check Shymbulak gondola access separately with the resort.

Use live directions to the gondola base station in the Medeu area, then take the gondola if operating.
Road restrictions were announced for Medeu–Tuyuk-Su from 24 July to 30 November 2026. Check resort updates and the last descent.

Travel from Hostel O2: ≈ 1 hr 35 min–2 hr 20 min
Bus 124 to Popova → change to bus 211 for Alma-Arasan → walk about 7 minutes.
Check the weather, gorge access and bus 211 timetable before leaving; temporary restrictions are possible.

Bus 16, 126 or 206 from Ulitsa Varlamova to Ploshchad Astana → walk 1–2 minutes.

Travel from Hostel O2: ≈ 35–50 min
Bus 16, 126 or 206 to Ploshchad Astana → walk north along Panfilov Street for 8–12 minutes.
A historic city market filled with fruit, dried fruit, spices, local delicacies and the everyday energy of old Almaty.

Bus 16 or 126 from Ulitsa Varlamova to 28 Panfilov Guardsmen Park → walk about 6 minutes.
Morning is usually best. Check opening hours before visiting and keep an eye on personal belongings in busy aisles.

Direct bus 101 from Ulitsa Varlamova to TRC MEGA Alma-Ata → walk 2–4 minutes.
A large shopping and entertainment complex with boutiques, homeware, cafés and family activities.
Grand Park shop windows. Among the household things, home comes back to me.
Travel from Hostel O2: ≈ 20–35 min
Bus 106 or 37 from Ulitsa Varlamova to TRC Grand Park → walk about 6 minutes.
A central shopping complex close to the Palace of the Republic and Dostyk Avenue.
Dostyk Plaza. Reflected in the glass, the avenue keeps moving.
Travel from Hostel O2: ≈ 45–65 min
Direct bus 48 from Ulitsa Varlamova towards Gorny Gigant → leave near Ramstore / Palace of Schoolchildren → walk 3–6 minutes.
A modern shopping and entertainment centre with stores, a cinema, food court, restaurants and family activities.

Travel from Hostel O2: ≈ 35–50 min
Take public transport towards Seifullin Avenue and Timiryazev Street → leave by Forum at 617 Seifullin Avenue. Open the live route before leaving.
The mall is open daily from 10:00 to 22:00; individual venues may keep different hours.
The park is fully closed for reconstruction, according to the city notice of 8 September 2026. The reopening date will be announced separately.

Travel from Hostel O2: ≈ 45–70 min
After official reopening: Bus 59 from Ulitsa Varlamova to Orbita-1 / Toraigyrov–Mustafin → walk 12–18 minutes.
Do not plan a walk inside the park until reopening is announced; check the city’s latest notice.
A leafy 4.5-kilometre riverside health trail for walking, running and a quiet break at the foot of the mountains.
Water runs downhill. The Terrenkur climbs higher; my breathing grows louder.
Travel from Hostel O2: ≈ 55–75 min
For the upper trail: bus 65 to Abai / Baitursynuly → bus 21 towards Medeu to the Most stop → walk about 4 minutes.
The trail is long and climbs gradually. Carry water, wear comfortable shoes and open the live route before leaving.

Travel from Hostel O2: ≈ 3–4 hr each way · 9–11 hr total
Travel by car, private transfer or organised tour along the Kuldja Highway to the Valley of Castles car park.
There is no reliable direct public transport. Cars stay above the canyon; in summer leave early and carry water and sun protection.
An alpine lake framed by Tien Shan spruce; Lower Kolsai is road-accessible, while the upper lakes require trekking.

Travel from Hostel O2: ≈ 4.5–5.5 hr each way · better overnight
Travel by car, transfer or tour: Almaty → Shelek → Kegen → Saty → Lower Kolsai.
An express day trip takes 13–16 hours. Swimming is prohibited and mountain weather changes quickly.
A sand mountain up to 150 metres high that produces a low hum in dry weather, with wide Altyn-Emel views.

Travel from Hostel O2: ≈ 5–6 hr each way · better over 2 days
Travel by tour, transfer or a dependable vehicle: Konaev → Saryozek → Basshi → park route 1.
A permit via Basshi is required and there is no public transport. The dune may not sing after rain.

Travel from Hostel O2: ≈ 2–2.5 hr each way · 6–8 hr total
Travel by car, transfer or tour via Konaev towards Bakanas; the final 10–15 km are on an unpaved road.
This is Tamgaly-Tas on the Ili, not the UNESCO Tamgaly site. After rain the track can be difficult for a saloon car.
A beach escape to Kapchagay Reservoir, with a renewed waterfront, open views, walking paths and sports areas beside the water.
The steppe ends here. A small wave from Kapchagay laps at my feet.
Travel from Hostel O2: ≈ 1 hr 15 min–1 hr 45 min each way · easy half-day trip
Travel by car, taxi or transfer along the A3 to Qonaev’s city waterfront and official beach No. 5.
Weekdays are usually calmer. Swim only at officially approved beaches; check the weather, wind and bathing-season status before leaving.

Travel from Hostel O2: ≈ 25–40 min
Take public transport from the Tole Bi area towards Abai Avenue and Tlendiev Street → walk a short distance to 157A Abai Avenue.
Check current opening hours and table availability on the official website before visiting.
A restaurant-museum of national Kazakh cuisine, with regional recipes, beshbarmak, horse-meat dishes and traditional pastries.

Take a bus east along Tole Bi towards the centre → leave near Abylai Khan Avenue → walk 5–10 minutes to No. 55.
Advance table booking is a good idea in the evening.

Take bus 126 from Ulitsa Varlamova to Ploshchad Astana → walk about 4 minutes to 125 Panfilov Street.
Booking a table ahead is recommended at busy times.
