Medeu in Almaty: heritage and visiting restrictions
Medeu is a well-known high-altitude sports complex. Construction now shapes any visit: exploring the area and entering an operating ice rink are different plans.

The present Medeu rink opened on 28 December 1972 and is part of Almaty's speed-skating heritage. The scale of the arena and its mountain setting explain its place among the city's recognisable landmarks. Historic photographs of skating do not establish present-day access.
Reconstruction and access
The city announced reconstruction with planned completion in the fourth quarter of 2027. This is a target, not a guaranteed reopening date. Check access before setting out and do not make ice skating an essential part of your itinerary.

Have an alternative
If access is restricted or lifts are stopped, move the mountain trip to another day and explore the historic centre. Do not count on walking around closed road sections.
