Shymbulak

About the place

A mountain resort above Medeu; check gondola operation and access restrictions before travelling.

From a training base to a mountain resort

Shymbulak developed as a ski training base from 1954. The gondola from Medeu, launched in 2010, and upgrades for the 2011 Asian Winter Games marked an important change. This history helps explain the combination of sporting slopes, lifts and viewing areas that also attracts visitors without skis.

The resort announced restrictions on private cars along the Medeu–Tuyuk-Su road for 24 July–30 November 2026. Plan around current access instructions and gondola operation. Medeu is under reconstruction: travelling towards the resort does not mean access to the arena, and published summer hours do not establish September opening times.

Visiting tips

Road restrictions were announced for Medeu–Tuyuk-Su from 24 July to 30 November 2026. Check resort updates and the last descent.

Check every lift you need and the last descent immediately before travelling; do not improvise a bypass around closed sections.

Bring a warm layer and rain protection. For a first visit, choose open walking areas and plan any longer hike separately.
