Abai Opera and Ballet Theatre

Abai Opera and Ballet Theatre

About the place

A 1941 architectural landmark combining grand classicism, Kazakh ornament, opera and ballet in the historic centre.

The theatre's history

The theatre traces its beginnings to 13 January 1934, when the musical comedy Aiman-Sholpan was first performed. Its stage later became an important setting for the development of Kazakh opera and ballet, with productions including Kyz Zhibek and Abai.

Build your visit around a performance that interests you and leave time to look at the building separately. Before buying a ticket, read a short synopsis and check the language of the production; this can make a first opera visit easier to follow.
